📌 🇱🇰 Auditor General Post Vacant Since April: 4 Nominees Rejected by the Constitutional Council

⭕ The Auditor General post has been vacant since April 2025 after the previous official retired.

⭕ The President has nominated 4 individuals, all of whom were rejected by the 🇱🇰 Constitutional Council.

⭕ Latest rejection: a senior Army audit officer, also blocked by the Council.

⭕ Cabinet spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the Council’s responsibility is to assess whether the nominee presented is suitable, not to search for alternative candidates.

“There may be others who are more qualified, but that is not the Council’s role. They must judge the nominee before them.”

⭕ The current non transparent, closed door appointment and approval process is unfair to nominees and not ideal for transparency.

⭕ Sri Lanka needs a public confirmation hearing system for top presidential appointments such as:

Auditor General
Governor of the Central Bank
Attorney General
DG of the Bribery Commission
Inspector General of Police
Justices etc.

Similar to the system used in the US 🇺🇸.

⭕ Public hearings would potentially expose unqualified nominees, causing political embarrassment to the President.

⭕ Conversely, a qualified nominee would be able to demonstrate their subject knowledge and professional competence, thereby strengthening public trust and placing greater pressure on Constitutional Council members to approve them.

⭕ Ultimately, such a process would ensure that qualified, confident, and knowledgeable individuals are appointed to key positions, people who truly understand their subject areas, carry less political baggage, and can perform independently.
