Sri Lanka's 🇱🇰 Metro Bus Project Expands: Seven New Routes Announced

⭕ One of the new government’s most widely welcomed initiatives, the Metro Bus project is now moving towards full implementation, marking one of Sri Lanka’s most promising efforts in recent decades to modernize and revitalize urban public transport.

⭕ Following an initial pilot involving 10 low-floor buses, the project is now moving into a wider Colombo-area rollout with seven newly announced routes.

➡️ Battaramulla → Ekala
➡️ Dematagoda → Panadura
➡️ Makumbura → Pettah
➡️ Millennium City → Colombo Fort
➡️ Kollupitiya Circular Route

⭕ The rollout includes 104 imported low-floor buses, designed to improve access for elderly passengers and persons with disabilities.

⭕ The Cabinet approved 50 more low-floor buses a 50% reorder on the initial 100-bus contract to support the network’s expansion.

⭕ Beyond Colombo, expansion is planned for Kandy, Galle, and Jaffna, selected on the basis of passenger demand and their function as regional transport and tourism hubs.

⭕ The network will incorporate real-time fleet tracking, tap-in/tap-out fare payment, live arrival information displays, and centralized operations management.

⭕ The initiative is positioned as a step toward a more organized, accessible, and data-driven alternative to Sri Lanka's currently fragmented urban bus system.
