4 Javelins of Men’s Javelin World Lead Rumesh Tharanga Damaged on Turkish Airlines Flight

⭕ Sri Lanka’s 🇱🇰 Rumesh Tharanga, the current men’s javelin world leader, reportedly had four javelins damaged while returning from Hungary 🇭🇺 to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 on Turkish Airlines.

⭕ The damage was discovered after the flight, and a complaint was lodged with Turkish Airlines over the handling of the equipment.

⭕ Tharanga said three of the damaged javelins had each been used for more than 90 throws.

⭕ “It might have been a mistake by the airline, but that’s how it is. It’s not a big issue. I’ll move on,” Tharanga said.

⭕ Competition javelins are precision-built equipment. Their shafts, metal heads, dimensions and centre of gravity must meet set specifications.

⭕ Damage to the shaft or tip can affect a javelin’s balance, shape and flight characteristics, which can disrupt training and competition preparation.

⭕ Tharanga was returning to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 after competing at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Hungary 🇭🇺, where he won the men’s javelin with a 91.09m throw.
