Foreign bank branches

Parent bank’s international ratingFitch · Moody’s

Neither Sri Lankan agency rates these banks. A branch is legally part of its parent, so the parent’s rating is the best guide. It is on the international scale, so it can’t be compared with the (lka) and LRA grades above.

What the grades mean

Each agency’s scaleOutlooks and watches

GradeWhat it means
AAA(lka)The highest national rating: the lowest default risk of any issuer in Sri Lanka.
AA+ / AA / AA-Very low default risk compared with other Sri Lankan issuers; only slightly weaker than AAA.
A+ / A / A-Low default risk relative to other Sri Lankan issuers, but changing circumstances or economic conditions hurt more than at higher grades.
BBB+ / BBB / BBB-Moderate default risk relative to other Sri Lankan issuers; adverse changes are more likely to affect timely repayment.
BB+ / BB / BB-Elevated default risk relative to other Sri Lankan issuers; repayment is somewhat uncertain and more exposed to adverse changes over time.
B+ / B / B-Significantly elevated default risk; obligations are being met, but with a limited margin of safety.
CCCVery high default risk relative to other Sri Lankan issuers.
CC / CDefault of some kind appears probable (CC), or is imminent or under way (C).
RD / DRestricted default (missed some payments but still operating) or default.
(lka)
Marks Fitch’s Sri Lanka national scale. AA-(lka) is not the same as an international AA-.
Outlook
The direction a rating is likely to move over one to two years: Stable, Positive, Negative or Evolving.
Rating Watch
A higher chance of a near-term change, usually triggered by a specific event and resolved over a short period. Positive, Negative or Evolving.
Reviewed
Fitch looked at the rating (for example after a criteria change) and left it unchanged.
Fitch Ratings Lanka
National ratings are not global ratings
A national rating ranks an issuer against other Sri Lankan credits, with the strongest in the country at AAA. That is why Bank of Ceylon can hold AA-(lka) at home while Fitch rates it CCC+ on the international scale, capped by the sovereign rating. Compare institutions with each other, not with the country. Where both agencies rate an institution the grades can differ; neither is the “official” one. Deposits at licensed banks and finance companies are insured up to Rs 1.1 million per depositor, whatever the rating.

The agencies

Fitch Ratings Lanka

The Sri Lankan arm of Fitch Ratings. Its national ratings carry an ‘(lka)’ suffix and rank issuers against the best credit in Sri Lanka, not against the world.

Lanka Rating Agency

Colombo-based agency, formerly ICRA Lanka, licensed by the SEC. Its entity ratings use the same AAA-to-D letters on a Sri Lankan national scale.

These are the only two agencies licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission to rate in Sri Lanka; the SEC invited applications for new agencies in July 2026. Foreign parent banks are rated abroad by Fitch, Moody’s and S&P.

Ratings are checked daily. Each agency reviews its ratings about once a year, so the date shows when the rating was last confirmed.
